Custom Gutenberg blocks can be built with ACF, which registers blocks in PHP with fields editors fill in. ACF blocks are quick to build and easy to maintain. Native React blocks suit richer editing, such as inline text and live previews. We choose per block, and many themes use both.
What is a WordPress block theme?
A WordPress block theme is a theme built entirely from blocks, with templates and styles set in theme.json and editable in the Site Editor. Block themes replace much of the old PHP template work. We use them for new builds because design settings live in one place and editors can adjust layouts safely.
Do custom Gutenberg blocks break when WordPress updates?
Custom Gutenberg blocks rarely break on WordPress updates when they are built on core APIs such as block.json and theme.json. Breakage usually comes from blocks copied from old tutorials or tied to a page builder. We test the theme against each major WordPress release on staging before updating production.
